Context: Art, Books, & Freedom Curated by Meg Hitchcock
In CONTEXT: Art, Books & Freedom, artist and curator Meg Hitchcock brings together 15 artists whose work incorporates books and text. The artists diverge in their approach and content, from social commentary to political statement to literary allusion, but their common ground is their love of the printed word. The artists use books and text as tools of investigation, exploring the psychological impact of visual language while pushing the boundaries of our freedom to express views that diverge from popular opinion. Paradoxically, the book is used as a means to question its own authority within the context of a liberal arts library. Indeed, the artists' works take on new meaning at Columbia University, where they exercise the freedom of expression at a critical time and place in our nation's history.

The Art of the Art Clinic Online curated by J. Jordan Bruns
The Art Clinic Online (ACO) fosters community, conversation, and connection among artists and art enthusiasts across the DC, Maryland, and Virginia region. Every other Saturday, artists share their work and stories in an hour-long Zoom gathering that celebrates creativity in all its forms. This exhibition brings those voices off-screen and into the gallery, highlighting the diverse perspectives and practices that define our artistic community. We invite you to explore the work, join the conversation, and experience the richness of the ACO collective.

While sheltering in place, at the beginning of the pandemic, I began typing letters using a vintage Royal Quiet De Luxe manual typewriter to maintain my sanity and at the same time to stay connected with my family and friends who were living far away. After a while, I began to incorporate the typing into my drawings. The process of typing repeated phrases about coronavirus, social distancing, and my concerns about social justice led me to type more intimate stream-of-consciousness diary entries.

Inside Outside, Upside Down
The Phillips Collections presents this special juried invitational exhibition
Featuring dynamic work across media by 64 artists of the greater DC region, this juried invitational celebrates The Phillips Collection’s 100th anniversary, building on the legacy of founder Duncan Phillips and his commitment to presenting, acquiring, and promoting the work of artists of the greater DC region.
Inside Outside, Upside Down offers a slice of the turbulent past year, one that left us confused, battered, and disoriented. Out of the palpable thoughts and feelings expressed in the works on view, five themes emerged: “Innocence Interrupted” recognizes the young children and young adults whose lives were upended by the constant fear and uncertainty brought on by so much violence and death; “Days of Reckoning and the Right to ‘Be’” speaks to the forced realization that our country is at a major crossroads, as many long-established societal systems have become increasingly out of touch, obsolete, and even detrimental to a population whose needs are constantly evolving; “Bearing Witness” represents the artists who document the times in which they live, making sure that we record, reflect, and remember; “Introspection and Reflection” examines what happens when Washington, DC, is forced to come to a standstill, with some of us sitting quietly with ourselves, while others had to confront the dynamics of their relationships; and “Hope and Healing” illustrates how art has the ability to help us process and heal in times of pain and great loss, allowing us to celebrate the simple joys in life.
Taken together, the works in this exhibition affirm the human need to make sense of traumatic experiences and ultimately transcend them, either by creating from that place or in spite of it. In this way, these works offer a collective call for healing. They invite us to appreciate the beauty in the world around us, find comfort in our family and friends, and unearth the things that are revealed to each of us when life requires us to sit still with ourselves.

OVERTHINKER
TymeLapse Studio presents this online exhibition
"A person who thinks all the time has nothing to think about except thoughts. So, he loses touch with reality and lives in a world of illusions. By thoughts I mean, specifically, chatter in the skull—perpetual and compulsive repetition of words, of reckoning, and of calculating.I’m not saying that thinking is bad; like everything else, it’s useful in moderation, a good servant but a bad master. And all so-called civilised peoples have increasingly become crazy and self destructive because through excessive thinking they have lost touch with reality. That’s to say we confuse signs, words, numbers, symbols, and ideas with the real world." - Alan Watts
"OverThinker" aims to take inspiration from daily life, anxieties, stresses, and the current situation, to create an engaging online exhibition.
MINDFULNESS
An online exhibit curated by Visionary Projects and Voss Gallery
“Mindfulness has become an essential component in contemporary life, reminding us to take a breath and become aware of our thoughts and immediate surroundings. In our ever connected social society, our virtual interactions compete for prominence and can cloud our perceptions of the world around us. Practicing mindfulness helps us cultivate a moment to moment awareness that calms the mind and fosters meaningful connections and self-growth. The diverse works included in this group exhibition best reflects the theme, offering viewers an inspiring space of tranquility and peace.”
SHAPE IN ALL ITS FORMS AT SITE: BROOKLYN GALLERY
Juried by Hunter Drohojowska-Philp
In art, shape is both elusive and omnipresent. It structures our optical world but is often forgotten. Focus on it is often neglected in favor of color, concept, tactility, and subject. This show aims to bring shape to the forefront, to highlight its presence and dynamic interaction with subject matter and other formal considerations.

You got to pick the notes you really mean!”

Jason McCoy Gallery is pleased to present an online exhibition of drawings inspired by Amanda Gormon’s words from the Presidential Inauguration in 2021: "Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true. That even as we grieved, we grew. That even as we hurt, we hoped. "

THE PORTRAIT
TussleProjects is excited to present "the Portrait", an online group exhibition curated by Laura Horne which includes the work of 18 artists all created within the last year.
This exhibition presents the portrait as a basic substructure of humanity; how do we ‘delicately’ approach identity, collective experiences, and collective politics through portraiture? Portraiture is a study of the intricate notions of the self, the other, and the spaces we occupy. Whether presented honestly or falsely, portraiture nevertheless presents a subject in the infinite present. Can portraiture still follow this same paradigm given all of the differences collective isolation presents for the future of our identity as whole?
